Have you ever heard the analogy that you can only have two burners “on” at once? Then everything else is pushed to a back burner that simply “stays warm” -- or maybe is off completely? I was thinking about this analogy the other day as it specifically relates to my business (and your business as well).
In life, my business and my health are on the front two burners as priorities, but on the “stay warm” is my relationship and my social life. Now this doesn’t mean I’m not paying attention to those burners, but they’re just not where I am actively investing large chunks of time and focus. Sidenote: I realize this may come off wrong as we are getting married this year, but I can promise you that my fiance will ALWAYS be a priority - i.e. we go to couples counseling every other month just to keep our relationship and each other top of mind, we are also doing premarital counseling right now, we do monthly date nights, and always make dedicated, quality time for each other. So maybe to some we’re doing more than most, but to me those things are necessary to keep a happy and healthy relationship or marriage.
Back to the burners on “high”. I want to focus in on the business because I think there’s 3 specific things we can focus on to keep our business burning HOT.
Know what your focus is. What items are you focusing on IN your business right now? Is it gaining new clients? Is it generating awareness? Is it expanding by hiring a team? Is it creating more ways to earn passive income? Where are you focusing your energy and time? Because if you’re trying to focus on all of it, none of it will get done well.
Know your IMPACT. Where can YOU personally make the most impact in your business? Then, what can you outsource? If there are things that eat up your time, energy and focus, outsource them. This is where VA’s and OBM’s come in handy.
Know how to be consistent. This isn’t so much knowing as it is doing. But know what tasks you need to do repeatedly to yield results. Some of these things may look different for each person, but some things that come to mind are posting on social media daily, engaging with your target audience whether in person or online, creating new material, programs or products, thinking of new ideas and ways to grow your business, investing in yourself. If you’re doing all of these things consistently, your business will continue to grow.
Now, outside of just your “business burner”, what is your other burner that is a priority? Maybe it’s your personal life burner. Think about hiring a babysitter a few hours a week, or a house cleaner, or someone to do your laundry (this is my dream). Maybe it is your love life/relationship that needs to be a burning hot and getting your attention. Schedule a couples therapy session, set a monthly date for a date night, focus on no phone time with your significant other to connect, plan a trip, etc.
Figure out what areas of your life are on what burners. Then figure out how to maximize the heat within those areas to create the biggest impact. What burners are burning hot for you right now and what are you focusing on in each to keep the heat?
